Care for Your Career Like You Care for Your Teeth

You can't escape the chair!

No one wakes up one morning and decides that they hate their job.  It might appear that way, but the reality is that there have been warning signs and build up for quite some time.  The same goes for oral health problems.  A Gallup-Healthways poll from earlier this year indicated that one out of every three Americans did not visit a dentist last year.  Whether it's fear, laziness or money holding you back, a visit to the dentist's chair is inevitable, so why delay?

Caring for your career is a lot like caring for your teeth; when problems arise, they can be severe.  There's also a good chance that they could have been prevented.  Here's your oral care work maintenance tool kit.

Unemployment Rate Could Dictate Changes in Congress

If you are like me, you are asking yourself daily “Is the economy EVER going to get better?”. I'm beginning to feel there isn't a person in this world that has the answer. (IF you do, contact me. That valuable information could make us millions!!).

I wake up every morning wondering if this will be the day that I get called into “the room” where you are given your pink slip and then tossed out the door with nothing more than your small box of belongings, a false apology, and the strong urge to run into oncoming traffic.

Extreme Job Hunting: Where Do You Draw the Line?

In this time of high unemployment numbers, how do you get noticed by potential employers? A recent Wall Street Journal article by Joanne S. Lublin addressed this question. Lessons of Extreme Job Hunting provided some examples of what desperate job-seekers have tried. The article describes one man who wore a sandwich board with “M.I.T. graduate for hire” in the financial district where he had worked. Creative? Possibly, but it didn’t land him any interviews.

So in your effort to stand out in your employment search, what kinds of moves are not cool? An accompanying article by Dana Mattioli, Bold or Brazen? Bold Tactics Don’t Always Get the Job discussed behaviors recruiters advise against. Most often, people are not following established protocols for interviews, i.e., showing up in person when a phone interview was scheduled or harassing recruiters with phone calls.

4 Work/Life Balance Lessons We Can Learn from TV

We’re hearing so much these days about needing to strike a healthy balance between our work and personal lives. It’s starting to sound like that “Far Side” cartoon where the dog hears his master’s voice as “blah, blah, blah.” Do you really know anyone who pulls off the life/work balance thing successfully?

As a corporate-world escapee, artist, psychotherapist and freelance writer, I’d love to tell you that I’ve achieved this balance. Well, kind of. Has it been from years of diverse work experience, clinical training and vast amounts of self-help/biz-book reading? Nah, I’ve picked it up from watching too much TV - not brainy PBS-type TV, but sitcoms, reality shows, etc. Here’s what I’ve learned...

Are You INTO THE WILD at Work?

I have long admired the free-wheeling minimalist approach to life that Chris McCandless embraced. The wondering genius, whom which the book and movie Into the Wild is about, gave up all of his material belongings after college and trekked to Alaska to see how he would fare living off the land. As you probably know, the story doesn't end well, but it is still a beautiful journey, one that holds valuable career advice.

Don't Crash the Plane. Sick? Stay Home!

You never know which words will be your last, so no matter who you are or where you work, it is important to choose them wisely.

“If I call in sick now I’ve got to put myself in a hotel until I feel better.” If that happened, she said, “at least I’m in a hotel room on the company’s buck. But we’ll see. I’m pretty tough.”

Those were the words spoken by commuter plane co-pilot Rebecca L. Shaw before her ill-fated flight 340 from Newark to Buffalo crashed into the ground killing all 49 people on board and one pour soul on the ground.

We've all made light-hearted comments about sucking our employers dry. But when they are taken out of context, they can make the employee look insubordinate and small. If the sh*t ever hits the fan, you better believe that every conversation you have ever had while at work, be it a phone call, email or texting, will come to light. So please dear Jobacle readers, mind your tongues!

I am not passing judgment on the pilots at the helm when the plane went down, but evidence appears to point to a perfect storm of HR woes. The employees appeared to be...

Common Work Error: Thinking For Other People

The internal dialogue: Whether we're talking to other people in our heads or talking to ourselves, all of us conduct our own personal conversations--that no one else ever hears. (Some of us do it more than others.)

Thinking conversations through before they happen can be a useful tool in your workplace arsenal, but it is important to use the tactic sparingly. If not, you open yourself up to a whole world of hurt.

Next time you find yourself carrying on dialogue in your own head where you are speaking for your fellow office workers, here's what you can do to validate or reject the thoughts...
